Lake Trip in Arkansas
Home....Home....Home
Oh how I love the great state of Arkansas. I have been spending time during my summers up on Greers Ferry Lake since before I can even remember.
On the way home yesterday I realized that it is the ONE place that has never changed, as far a locations go, in my life. Being the daughter of a Head Football Coach means moving a lot and then I personally have moved a lot. BUT......I get up to the lake and it is ever constant and dependable and I am so thankful to my Daddy Bob for always having it open for us. I have a million memories on that lake and it feels like home when we return each year!
I, of course, love taking photos so this is really like a portrait post of the Dixon/Hughes/Bradley family! ha! I will have more pics of the beautiful mountains and water on another day!
So lets begin this beast by saying that the night before I left I was having dinner with friends...came home and blogged about it till 1 am....finished packing.....slept FOR ONE HOUR.....and decided that I was to excited to get to Arkansas that I would just get up and hit the road!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CRAZY GIRL I KNOW!!!! Nothing like driving by downtown Dallas at 3.30 am! ha!
It was just me driving up so I had the freedom to just be spontaneous! Got coffee at 3.30 then was the first person in the line at Mc D's at 5.30 am hahahhhha watched the sun come up over small ponds and the fog appear! Something to be said for watching the sun come up! Oh it just takes my breath away sometimes.......and of course I had my Addison Road blaring and singing at the top of my lungs! ha!
Made it to Conway before 9.30am and was out of their Walmart with my groceries in no time.
And this is why I would do such a crazy thing.............oh my love for a clear spring fed lake and mountains.....say hello to Sugar Loaf Mountain......

Parents were totally not surprised at my early arrival ha! I can be so much like my Daddy Bob "mom's dad" with my early trips. I changed into my bathing suit and we hit the water right away!

I was SOOOOOO tired by that night and crashed pretty early. The next morning Uncle Scott, Aunt Chris, Melissa and Dustin came over and we all hopped on the boat to head out to our big Arkansas event of the day.............

that is right everyone........CARDBOARD BOAT RACES! so fun.
But before I get into that, we still had a long boat ride to the location so I used it to snap everyone's cute face!

ok so now on to the days event. The cardboard boat races have been around for awhile. We never get to come to the lake in July because back in the day Dad was getting ready for two-a-days to start so we never got to experience this Arkansas event.
Boats pull up from all over the lake and hook on to one another...

hundreds of people come out for the all day events of boat racing, food, contests, and fun.

so the boats have to be made out of cardboard...that is the rule. They do have different categories so some, like the whale below, have seats and other things in them.

inside the whale

but most boats are just straight up cardboard.....fascinating really. It was so interesting walking around and looking at the boats and the owners that had made them.
People below watching the race go on. They say that it is sometimes more fun to watch the boats that look great but almost sink immediately hahahahaha

a dragon....

of course I am beginning to see the deep, DEEP love for the Hog from all Arkansas people.......so here is the Razorback cardboard boat lookin so good...............

and of course....no event, in my mind, is complete without the Viking boat......
